I find the dosage amounts confusing. Please Explain what these numbers mean, and what potency I should look for in a probiotic supplement?

It’s not surprising that this area is confusing to most people. Bacteria are numberd in millions, billions, and trillions. Those numbers are difficult to fathom. “Billion” is the world to remember. That’s 1,000,000,000. According to specialists in the field, the minimum number of viable bacteria needed is at least 10 to the 8 power or 10 to the 9 power, or one half to one billion per serving. This is the suggested minimum. More can be taken. In some clinical studies involving infants, for example, as many as 10 to the 12 powder have been taken without side effects.

The vast majority of probiotics need to be refrigerated, which is why you usually find them in the refrigerated section of the store. However, some manufactures have perfected their processing so the bacteria are stable, some even for years, at room tempeature. We perfer these because they are convenient to take along when travelling.

What type of bacteria should I look for in a product?

We believe the two most important strains of friendly bacteria are Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium. These bacteria will provide benefit throughout the intestinal tract. In the healthy human, Lactobacillus acidophilus bacteria exist from the upper part of the small intestine to the lower part of the small intestine. Bifidobacterium exist from the lower part of the small intesine tothe large intestine. By combining these strains, you should be able to suppress harmfull bacteria and toxic substances along the entire intestinal tract. Also we recommend human strain probiotics that are stable at room temperature for their full shel live.

I was told that I sould take an acidophilus supplement early in the morning on an empty stomach, when stomach acid is low. What is your view on this?

The issue of stomach acid is an important one. We agree that stomach acid can destory the probiotics and cause you to waste your time and hard-earn money. These are few strains of bacteria that can withstand the strong acids that are produced on an empty stomach for extended periods of time.

After a meal,  the stomach becomes less acidic. This allows bacteria a better chance of surviving. In several studies, survial of Lactobacillus acidophilus was found to be much lower in participants who were fasting versus participants who were fed. In addition, the decreased acidity following the consumption of food enabled the population of Bifidobacterium ot double in size.

Therefore, we recommend that you take your brobiotic supplement with food or shortly after eating.
