While many other cartilage enhancing compounds are recommended for the treatment of arthritis, glucosamine is thought by many to be superior inĀ its biochemical absorbability. Glucosamine is readily assimilated and absorbed while cartilage extracts, and chondroitin sulfate products are comprised of much larger molecules. Studies have found that up to 98 percent of orally administered glucosamine sulfate is absorbed in its entirety. After oral administration a proportion close to 90 percent of glucosamine sulfate is absorbed. (more…)
Glucosamine vs. Ibuprofen

Clinical studies conducted in Portugal involving forty-eight patients who suffered from arthritis compared the action of Ibuprofen and glucosamine. Test results revealed significant data differentiating between the action and mechanics of the two substances. Patients who took Ibuprofen drug initially experienced quick pain relief over a period to two weeks. By contrast, the glucosamine users did not obtain as much pain relief over the same time interval. The testing continued and by the end of the eight week period the data took a flip flop. The Ibuprofen users were experiencing elevated pain levels while the glucosamine group was in significantly less pain.
What this study dramatically indicated was that time is an intrinsic part of glucosamine therapy and conclusions should not be drawn prematurely as to its effectiveness.

Glucosamine sulfate is a naturally occurring amino-monosaccharide found in highly concentrated amounts in the joints of mammals. When taken as a dietary supplement, glucosamine appears to be able to significantly restore normal biochemistry in supporting the rebuilding and healingof osteoarthritis cartilage. It is ideal as a supplement in that it supports cartilage function/repair over extended periods with no toxic side effects.
